Javier Tebas bets on a new model of solidarity in European football

The president of LaLiga believes that this would serve “to avoid the progressive destruction of the national leagues”

The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, advocated this Thursday in Prague for a change in the model of solidarity in the financing of European football, something that must necessarily go through UEFA. “I don’t agree with the current model of solidarity because the leagues get little and the clubs that don’t participate in European competitions get little,” Tebas, who took part in the meeting, told Efe. Defense of European football organized by the World Football Summit.

Tebas pointed out that the new model, always “around UEFA”, will serve to avoid the progressive “destruction” of national leagues, in which rich clubs have access to European competitions, while the rest remain in a situation of economic instability.

The president of LaLiga reminded that last season “the big leagues gave up 50 or 60 million (euros) to distribute to other lower leagues, and that is not enough.” “You have to look for other models, but you can’t do everything at once,” said Tebas, who has been in charge of LaLiga for a decade and will launch the European Club Union in Brussels this week, a platform that will accommodate medium-sized clubs and small ones so they can defend better their rights. Creating a front against the Super League project promoted by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus is one of the missions Tebas has set himself as a challenge.

Tebas believes that the project led by Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, would be very harmful to the European football ecosystem and estimates that 52,000 professional players and coaches would be affected by the Superliga. “The collapse of the Superliga would destroy the existence of those 52,000 families,” emphasized Tebas.
