FCB has to do without fans in Nice!

As the Basel team announced on Thursday afternoon, the ban on guest fans in the French city remains in place. This was after FCB took legal action against this decision. But now it’s certain.

One of the main reasons for this ban was that strikes were planned in the city on Thursday and the police had to ensure the safety of the participants. FCB considers it an “arbitrary act” on Wednesday.

FCB boss Degen is disappointed

FCB boss David Degen (40) also finds clear words about the ban: “The way in which this ban became final on the match day itself is very disappointing and makes the whole process very random.” FCB sees this as “clearly anti-competitive”, “that’s why we expected a very clear signal, a strong word, from UEFA. Cases like this are piling up and they just can’t – after the UEFA president recently spoke out clearly against the exclusion from away supporters.

In the press release, FCB lists the reasons for the negative decision of the administrative court:

  • the problems in the Marseille-FCB match in 2022 and the recent problems in FCB-YB
  • the problems in Nice, including during the Nice–1 match. FC Cologne
  • a brawl that took place last night in Menton (near Nice) of which videos were published on social media
  • a demonstration in Nice against the pension law in France, which could lead to riots
  • the need to control the border against illegal immigrants
  • only 3 of the 5 police units requested by the prefect were made available to her
  • Uncertainty whether organizing a fan zone would be enough to prevent unrest
  • the expected riots would not take place in the stadium. The fears are limited to unrest that could arise outside the stadium, in the entire Nice region

FCB fans gather in Italy

Numerous FCB fans are already there. As the Muttenzer curve announces on its website, the match is now being followed about 55 kilometers from Nice in Sanremo, Italy.

Basel will fight for progress at 9 p.m. on Thursday in the second leg of the Conference League quarter-finals against Nice. In the first leg it was a 2-2 draw for the Bebbi. (tired)
