Queen stage of the Giro d’Italia to Crans-Montana

On May 19, the scene of a cycling treat: Steve Morabito and a group of amateur cyclists climb to Crans-Montana.

“A five-star stage,” Steve Morabito, the general manager of the organization in Valais, proudly proclaimed at the presentation.

The heart – and at the same time the biggest question mark – of the 208 km long stage is the Grote St. Bernard. Will the pass at 2469 meters be free of snow in a month? “Of course we hope so,” says former professional cyclist Morabito. “But rest assured we have a plan B as well.”

If the stage to Valais can be completed according to plan, it will be the route with the second most altimeters of this year’s Tour of Italy. “A real and beautiful mountain stage,” enthuses Morabito. The Slovenian Primoz Roglic and the Belgian Remco Evenepoel are the first contenders.

The Giro starts on Saturday 6 May with a time trial in Abruzzo. (SDA)
