Yanick Stampfli enters the playoffs as a striker on the hunt for goals.

He started the game as the nominal 13th striker, joined the team when Tino Kessler was injured in the second period and eventually became the game winner. After great preparatory work by Mike Künzle, he converted in front of goal in the 78th minute and made it 2-1 after extra time. “Geile Siech” was heard from his teammates. What a night for Yanick Stampfli!

Of course, the win was a bit of luck due to constant pressure from Servette upfront, he said in an interview with MySports, “but we’ll take it”. After all, the Bieler Break in Geneva changes the starting position. Stampfli is very cool about it: “Now we have to win our home games, then we can get the bucket.”

Reused at the EVZ

The 23-year-old is not one of the stars in the team like Toni Rajala, Damien Brunner or Gaëtan Haas. But as a universal genius, he is still an important element in Biel’s game. Because apart from the goal, the Solothurn from Subingen has played in all positions this season – as a defender, as a center, as a winger. To have such a variable player, to be able to use him where he is needed depending on the situation, is extremely valuable for coach Antti Törmänen.

Stampfli launched his career by storm as a goalscorer. At U15 level, he once scored 40 goals for Biel. Also in the team from then: the NHL star of today Janis Moser (22). In 2015, Stampfli then moved to EV Zug’s youth team. And there coach Leo Schumacher, the sponsor of many great players who died in 2021, made him a defender. As a defender, Stampfli also returned to EHC Biel in 2020 and as a defender he is also part of the Seeländer squad.

Wounded people led him back into the storm

But towards the end of qualifying Biel had a few injured strikers and so Stampfli switched back to attack. And there he has remained to this day. “I can say with a clear conscience that I also have a striker slumbering in me,” he said in an interview on the club’s website at the beginning of this year. But also: “I want to develop into a defensively solid attacking defender.” For the time being, Solothurn, who lives in Pieterlen, near Biel, makes his coach and the fans happy as a perfect all-rounder.
