The Muttenzer Curve is not allowed to travel to Nice on Thursday to encourage their team.

Fans of FC Basel are not welcome in Nice, the authorities announced on Wednesday morning. One of the main reasons they put forward is that strikes are planned in the city on Thursday and the police must ensure the safety of the participants. An “arbitrary act”, according to the FCB.

In the letter, the Ministry of the Interior also gives other reasons. So it refers to previous riots by FCB fans. The ministry presents a total of five cases from 2014.

Salzburg, Zion, Marseilles

On March 19, 2014, in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 against Salzburg, Basel supporters caused the game to be interrupted for 13 minutes because they kept throwing objects on the pitch. As punishment, the first leg in the quarterfinals against Valencia had to take place in front of empty ranks.

The incidents of October 2014 (fierce fighting with YB fans) and April 2015 (riots in the Tourbillon) are also listed. The authorities are also using the riots against Marseille last spring as an opportunity to exclude FCB fans from the second leg of the quarter-finals in the Conference League.

« Opposite political ideologies »

However, the ministry also pulls the ears of Nice fans and shows in more than ten cases that the supporters of the southern French are prone to riots. Example: Last September, the team met FC Köln, but the kick-off had to be postponed because the two fan camps attacked each other and threw high tables and pyros at each other.

Because of this, the “opposing political ideologies” and the announcements of riots on social media after the first leg, this measure is said to avoid a clash between the two supporters. FC Basel can now appeal against the decision in an accelerated procedure.

The Muttenzer Curve, meanwhile, announces on its website that the game would be watched “in the next larger city outside the ban limit” if the decision held. (che)
