Foxes goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev first hits Lukas Herburger from Schaffhausen (r.) on the upper body.

The Kadetten Schaffhausen were physically and athletically eliminated on Tuesday evening in the second leg of the European Cup in the Füchsen Berlin

The worst happened after 56 minutes: Berlin goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev charged in a defensive effort at cadet player Zoran Markovic and hit him with his right foot. The Swiss international fell to the ground with his head, remains dazed and has to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

A few minutes earlier, the 110-kilo keeper hit Lukas Herburger from Schaffhausen on the upper body with a similar action. The game was also over for the defense chief. Goalkeeper Milosavljev, who hurt his foot when he kicked, sees the red card for his foul on Markovic.

First everything clear

For Schaffhausen’s team, it is a blessing in disguise that team doctor Jean-Jacques Fasnacht is with them in Berlin. “We drove to the hospital with both players right after the final whistle,” said cadet sports director David Graubner. “The doctor was able to release the first all-clear. Both players can travel far enough to fly home with the team on Wednesday.” It is not yet clear how serious the injuries really are. Only further investigation in Switzerland will reveal this.

For the cadets it is a painful end to a strong European Cup adventure. After the 37:33 victory in the first leg of the quarter-finals, they brought the favored Germans to their room on the verge of elimination. The faces of the fox bosses around handball legend and sports director Stefan Kretzschmar get longer as the game progresses.

World Cup MVP shoots cadets

“If you are level with the Bundesliga leaders in the last minutes of the second leg, it is a dream situation,” says Graubner. “In hindsight it is of course bitter that it was not enough because of our mistakes. In the end, it took the World Cup MVP to beat us. The foxes themselves had not thought that.”

The MVP mentioned by Graubner is called Mathias Gidsel. The Danish left-hander was still injured in Schaffhausen and made his comeback in Berlin after 20 minutes. With ten goals from 13 attempts, Gidsel is practically alone in the 30:24 victory. The foxes play against Göppingen (D), Montpellier (F) and Granollers (Spain) in the final tournament of the Europa League for the second most important title in European club handball.

A final tournament that is within reach for the Schaffhausen team. «This European Cup season has already shown that participation in the Final Four is a real goal for us in the coming years. But first we have to win the championship title so that we don’t have to go through qualifying next season,” said sporting director Graubner.

In the battle for the championship title, the cadets will meet Scout Winterthur in the semi-finals after next week’s international break. It is uncertain whether Markovic and Herburger will be there. (cmu)
