Yverdon’s Marco Degennaro celebrates with Koro Kone after winning the cup against Lausanne a year ago. Can the general manager look forward to the promotion soon?

Yverdon won 4:3 in Schaffhausen on Friday evening – after a 1:3 deficit. They are four points ahead of the first pursuer from Lausanne, six points ahead of FC Wil, who are currently third, which entitles them to a barrage. The emergence of the Challenge League promoted in 2021 is increasingly likely. But there are many question marks over Yverdon Sport FC’s inadequate infrastructure for the Super League.

Is Yverdon playing in Neuchatel or Sion?

And these lead to many rumors. For example, that Yverdon is not allowed to play in its own stadium. And that is why there are concrete plans to switch to Neuchâtel or Sion. Or that Yverdon isn’t playing at all because it can’t handle the stadium splits. Thun, Aarau and their ilk would hope for the 3rd backdoor, which would allow them to take the Oberhaus stage if the people of Vaud gave up.

On May 1, when the licenses are initially distributed, you will receive the first clarity. Yverdon is unlikely to get the Super League right. But there is the second case. And Yverdon wants to have the permit for this at the latest. The contest should avoid hand rubbing as much as possible.

Statements by the Director General

Marco Degennaro, the man behind the Yverdon miracle, explains why: “We have two construction sites in the Stade Municipal,” says the Italian, who worked for Christian Constantin in Sion for many years and now still has a loose advisory mandate in Valais. “The first thing to mention is our lighting. Second, security. In these cases we do not meet the Super League standards. But in terms of security and sector separation, the necessary adjustments are absolutely feasible – such as increasing the rosters. That will not be a problem. It is different with the light intensity.”

500 lux is mandatory for the Challenge League. The general manager: «Our floodlight system does not offer this power. But then you get an exceptional permit, with which we now participate in the Challenge League. But most importantly, Yverdon City Council has given the go-ahead for a CHF 1.5 million loan for a new facility that meets the condition.”

Degennaro hopes for “a few stronger lamps”

In the Super League, on the other hand, you need 800 lux, which has been agreed upon by the league and live rights holder Blue Sport. That is why Yverdon has now contacted the city again and asked them to build the new floodlight system to this standard. Degennaro: «You need a few more powerful lamps. Not anymore. We hope to find a listening ear, because the extra financial effort is manageable.”

Because for Degennaro one thing is clear: “Otherwise we won’t have the best viewing figures. An hour’s drive to our home games makes no sense. No, dodging is out of the question for us. We want to play at home.” Giving up is also not an option. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have had to apply for a license for the Super League,” said the Italian.

Viewership average of 1050 – minus record

If all else fails, Swiss football can prepare for this: the small Stade Municipal (capacity: 6,600 fans) in the beautiful lakeside town of Yverdon-les-Bains becomes another Super League venue. Like last time in 2006. It would be the fourth ascent for the green-whites. Let’s hope some more fans come along. Yverdon currently averages 1050. That’s the worst value in the entire league…
