Author: María MuiñaCopa del Rey MAPFRE

The variety of lengths between different sailboats is one of the attractions of this tournament, which starts on April 28, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma

Nineteenth edition of Palma Vela will begin on April 28 with a characteristic line-up of boats — from 30 meters in length to eight small monodesigns — vying for victory in their respective categories. The tournament in Mediterranean waters will be preceded by La Larga for the third time. The championship will be organized by Real Club Náutico de Palma.

A sports event that is part of the event Calendar of the IMA 2023 regatta As a qualifier for the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge, some of the biggest competitive sailboats in the world, such as Wally and Maxis from the IMA (International Maxi Association), will compete.

Another prominent competitor will be Wallycento Galatea, directed by David M. Lesuchen, who will defend the title won last year in his category. In this edition, they will have opponents to confirm their first place Magic Carpet 3 Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, Morgan Francesco de Santis, Vera Nicolás González Cuadrado, Benjamin Potter’s S/Y Rose and Romain Mouchel’s Atalanta.

“It is a real pleasure for us to receive the super-long fleet again. We are also very grateful because the schedules are very tight and in the end it is difficult to organize a team of more than 30 crew members like Magic Carpet or Galateia”, he explains. Long live Mainemaresports coordinator of Real Club Náutico de Palma.

He Thursday, May 4 from 1:00 p.m.the first attention signal for the super-long fleet will be held. In addition, if conditions permit, the race committee intends to complete a maximum of six sailings. Of these half a dozen, at least two will be coastal.

The small single designs once again reinforce the character of the multi-class regatta that Palma Vela wants to develop. Therefore, the presence of small boats between eight and 11 meters, such as the J80, 6 Meters and Dragon, is also noteworthy.

“It is at the organizational level thanks to the efforts of all club employees, partners and institutions that we can accommodate longer ships and one design ships, which have their own space. The transformation that a club like this is going through is what makes it possible to host so many boats and they are all so different,” pointed out Vivi Mainemare.

In total of 23 monotypes they will fight in real time for the title. J80 and Dragon are some of the most traditional disciplines of Palma Vela. Others, such as 6 Meters, will make their Balearic Championship debut, having previously done so for Real Club Náutico Palma in the 2018 Copa del Rey Mapfre and the recently concluded Princesa Sofía Trophy.

The single design regatta program includes a total of nine windward/leeward sailings divided into three regatta days, starting from Friday, May 5, at 1:00 p.m..
