Lukas Görtler is usually not a man of superlatives. After the 2: 3 against Winterthur, the St.Gallen captain unpacks one thing: “It’s one of the worst defeats since I’ve been here.” Bitter, because the East Swiss are oppressively superior. With seven players, Grün-Weiss stormed forward at the start, after 20 minutes it was 5-0 after corner kicks. 2:3 after goals at half time. Because Lawrence Ati Zigi doesn’t make a good fall. First he allows himself to be caught in the goalkeeper’s corner with a free kick from Di Giusto, then he arrives too late for the third goal against Ardaiz. During the break whistles sounded from the stands, the majority of the more than 18,000 spectators in the Kybunpark cannot believe it.

Any hope that FCSG will turn the game around is dashed five minutes after the final whistle. Latte Lath unfortunately misses from the best position, moments later Winti-Goalie Kuster bounces a shot from Guillemenot over the crossbar. These are just two of the many opportunities that FCSG misses, especially in the first half. Winti coach Bruno Berner speaks of an “inability of the opponent”. “All statistics speak for St. Gallen. This is a great win for us. In terms of mentality, we have outgrown ourselves.”

Three Winti wins against St. Gallen

The promoted team had scored just more than one goal this season, away in the 3-1 win over Sion. Now the Zurich team has scored three times in one half. Because Zigi looks old, yes. But also because the St. Gallen naively counterattacked time and time again. “Anyone who defends like this no longer needs to talk about the European Cup. For us it’s about what Winti plays for: staying in the league’, says Peter Zeidler. He had watched the game from the stands due to a suspension, after which he declared the relegation battle. The FCSG is 7 points ahead of last Winterthur with eight rounds to go. And he has already beaten St. Gallen three times this season.
