Deportivo brings promotion away from home

Author: Marcos Miguez

Only five teams score fewer away goals than Cano’s team, which repeated its ballast in Ferrol: adding only 21 points in 16 away games

Of the 16 games Deportivo have played at home this season, they have added just 21 points. Only five wins, six draws and five losses. Very poor numbers for an aspiring champion. Seven First Federation teams surpass it, and five more come close. Algeciras, which is in decline, has 18. Only three less. And the worst thing is that the dynamics do not even bring improvement. From December 17 to today, Ćan’s team has achieved only one victory away from home. To the last club Talavera (0-1), on February 19, with a shot by Lebedenko in the first half. Since then, in the last two months: a draw against Linense (0-0), defeats in León (1-0) and Salamanca (2-1) and another draw, this time in Ferrol (0-0). “We will be a reliable away team,” promised Óscar Cano ahead of this last game.

borderline situation

With six games left in the regular season, this poor away game put Deportivo on the line. With 18 points, they have to overcome Alcorcón and Castilla by four (five, counting the goal-point favorable for the whites). If the two Madrid teams keep the scorers they have (average 1.93 per game), it is estimated that the champion should win 74 points. That is, the blue-whites should add 16 of the 18 in the game to reach that figure.

And it will not be easy to achieve them. The blue and whites still have to play at Riazor with Ceuta, Alcorcón and Algeciras; and far from Córdoba, Linares and Pontevedra. A very demanding calendar, especially compared to that of Castilla, which will have Unionistas, Talavera, Ceuta, CyD Leones, Fuenlabrada and Algeciras as opponents in the last six games.

Contrast with Riazor

The most striking thing about the bleeding of points that Deportivo leaves away is the contract with the team’s performance at the Riazor. At home, the blue and white team won 37 points out of 48 points. In A Coruña, they missed only four draws and one defeat. Seven wins and one draw (against Castilla), since the team started this positive streak at home on December 11th, precisely against Racing de Ferrol. In fact, Deportivo added three points more than Alcorcón and Castilla at home, and four more than the Greens, their three main rivals for direct promotion.

The goal difference for and against is also telling. +19 in Riazor and only +1 as a visitor. He scored only 14 goals at home. Only five teams in the league scored less away from home (Fuenlabrada, Linense, Badajoz, Pontevedra and Talavera). Four out of five teams are in decline.
