All good things come in threes. In the third final of a Masters 1000 tournament, Andrei Rublew (25, ATP 6) was crowned champion for the first time. In Monte-Carlo (Mon), the Russian defeated Dane Holger Rune (19, ATP 9) 5:7, 6:2, 7:5 in just over two and a half hours. In 2021 he lost the final in both the Principality and Cincinnati (USA).
“I don’t know what to say, I have tears in my eyes,” says an emotional Rublev after the victory. “I’ve tried so many times to win a Masters. I’m just happy.”
Things aren’t looking good for Rublev in the third set. He is 1:4 behind. “At that point I didn’t think about winning the game anymore,” he admits. But then Rune’s nerves begin to shake. The Dane first misses the chance for a double break to make it 5-1 and has to have the service taken away instead.
When he also conceded the break against 5: 6 shortly afterwards, he gave free rein to his anger. Enraged, he knocks two balls out of the stadium and receives a warning for this. Rublew seizes the opportunity coldly and confidently serves his 13th tournament victory at home. (bir)
