This weekend in the Super League, two coaches will sit alone in the stands. David Bettoni of Sion saw red in the 2-2 win against Servette because he was so angry that he threw a drinking bottle on the field. Two suspensions. St. Gallen’s Peter Zeidler received the fourth yellow card in the 1-1 draw in Lugano on Easter Monday. «I was too emotional and left my coaching zone. I would have liked a warning. But no criticism, the referees are doing a good job. It was my fault.” Banned for four yellow cards? “It won’t happen to me again. This ban will have an educational effect,” says Zeidler.

Bettoni – once yellow and once red in four games (!) – and Zeidler are not the only coaches who have already been banned to the stands this season. FCZ coach Bo Henriksen (card collector no. 1 in the league!), Mario Frick van Lucerne and YB coach Raphael Wicky also had to serve a suspension. Bettoni’s predecessor at the Sion-Bank Paolo Tramezzani also assiduously collected cards for his dismissal. Like FCB sports director Heiko Vogel during his time as interim coach: each a yellow card in the championship, cup and conference competition.

The fact that coaches and officials are also penalized with red and yellow was only introduced in Switzerland for the 2019/20 season. Lugano’s Mattia Croci-Torti is next suspended for four yellow points. “The last warning is a long time ago, I don’t get a fourth yellow card,” says de Ticino. He saw the last one on February 5 in Winterthur.

There are also the clean men of the league. GC coach Giorgio Contini and Servette coach Alain Geiger are the only Super League coaches who have not seen a card so far. It’s not that he never gets angry on the sidelines, says Contini, “but I try to control myself and not lose focus and respect.” He also demands the same from his employees. “We all have a certain role model function,” he says. Successfully! At GC, the bank is still without warning. In contrast, Geiger’s staff was booked three times. The most warned bank? Zion with seven yellow and one red.

In Lugano, St. Gallen and Lucerne you will find employees of the “map collection”. Athletics coach Nicholas Townsend has already received three yellow cards in Lugano. Croci-Torti defends Townsend. “He was warned every time for sprinting onto the pitch to cheer for goals.”

In St. Gallen, team manager Ramin Pandji came up with two yellow and one red. The red on April 2 against Servette had a signal effect. Zeidler self-assured: “Ramin has learned from it.” The emotional goalkeeping coach Lorenzo Bucchi (three yellow cards) is the busiest card collector on the bench in Lucerne.

By the way: Anthony Braizat from Lausanne-Ouchy is the top coach in Swiss professional football with four yellow cards and one red card, more than some defenders.
