“Maybe I’ll stay here a little longer. I don’t know if I dare go home tonight.” Marc-Antoine Pouliot smiles as he discusses the mood to be expected at home after Servette’s victory over Biel. Will his wife Joelle, born in Biel, even let him into the house? The striker finds this idea funny, but then gets serious again and says: «I think my wife and children like the Geneva team too. This is no problem.”

For Marc-Antoine Pouliot, this series is something special, regardless of the name of the opponent. “It’s my eleventh season in Switzerland and my first final,” notes the Canadian with a Swiss passport (by marrying Joelle), who will turn 38 next month. “It’s not insignificant in a career.” He had previously experienced two semi-finals – one with Friborg (2014) and one with Biel (2018).

Long week and difficult Friday

The first final match did not leave him cold. “It was a special feeling, especially the day before the game. I tried to prepare normally, but it wasn’t easy.” Even more than that one day on Friday, it was the whole week that felt long. After Servette knocked out reigning champion Zug last Saturday and qualified for the final. “Everyone here could hardly wait for it to finally start,” he says.

The name of the opponent then caused extra emotions. “I still have a lot of friends there,” Pouliot says of Biel’s wardrobe, which he himself went in and out of for six years. “But we are currently not in contact. This is completely normal. Everyone stays in their bubble for the final. Then we will contact you again. Everyone is on their own at the moment.”

“I’m at home everywhere”

He is in his second season with Servette. As an experienced professional, he knows what is important now. “Everyone is here to help their team and nothing else,” he says. Although he is relieved to have taken his first victory, Pouilot knows that his first title of his career is still a long way off.

The versatile striker was the Under-18 World Champion with Canada and won the QMJHL Championship with Rimouski. To lift the cup in Switzerland, three more successes are needed against Biel. The next chance for victory number 2: Sunday in Seeland, the actual home base of the Pouilots. “I’m at home everywhere in this series,” he laughs before saying goodbye and returning to his home. With a good feeling that he is welcome there.
