The clouds hang low in Engelberg on this Saturday morning, a mixture of snow and rain falls from the sky. The landscape suits the fate of Aline Danioth. A good month ago, the 25-year-old slalom specialist tore the cruciate ligament in her knee – not for the first, second or third time. No, for the fourth time. «This week I will have the holes in the bone made after the last surgery filled. In June I will go under the knife again to have the cruciate ligament patched,” she says.

Danioth speaks in public for the first time since her fateful fall. She is calm, open and always smiling – just the way she is. At the same time, the technician from Andermatt describes how difficult the past few weeks have been for her. “I still have dark moments, they keep coming. I know there is much more suffering in life and I try to put everything in perspective. But in the end it’s just bad for me personally.”

Operation, US tour, operation

Méribel, who finished sixth at the World Cup, did not think about stopping despite the renewed sporting tragedy. These thoughts were there more after her third cruciate ligament tear. “I have always shown that I can reach the top quickly. That gives me courage that I will succeed this time. In any case, I do not want to stop, I want to decide for myself when it is over.”

Before Danioth goes skiing again, she has many obstacles to overcome. She’s put her crutches down now – but not for long. After all: in May she clears her head during a road trip through the US with a colleague. “We’re getting a loan from my god. She lives in the US. Then it’s off to Las Vegas through national parks. I’m really looking forward to that.”

“No Late Effects”

Danioth wants nothing more than to return to ski racing. Whether and at what level it will work is open. She has to go through the surgery and rehabilitation somehow. “The doctors say that despite the four cruciate ligament tears, I don’t have to worry about the long-term consequences. If that were the case, I wouldn’t try. Because when I’m 40 I still want to ski, climb and mountaineering.”

There are people who don’t understand why Danioth continues after such serious injuries. They think she should stop. “I get what you mean. You only want the best for me. Still, I want to try,” says Danioth. The fact is: a comeback in the upcoming World Cup winter is quite unlikely. the skis.”And I won’t risk anything for a race or two,” she says.

Danioth is at a crossroads in her career. She’s ready to take that path full of obstacles again. “I know what to expect. And I’m ready to fight for my dream again.”
