Gabi Balboa is boxing European champion

It was hard work for Romanian-born Gabi Balboa Timar. Against the experienced Italian Giorgia Scolastri (34), the Basel player scores accurately early on, under deafening cheers from the audience. But her opponent from Italy remains tough until the end. After ten rounds, the judges crowned Balboa the winner with 96:95, 95:95 and 97:93.

Balboa is extremely happy with the win. But she’s not surprised. Even before the fight she seems relaxed, in a good mood, taking time for a chat here and a hug there. Nervous? She never is. Convinced of victory? She always is. Friday night’s title fight was Balboa’s second attempt at lifting the EBU belt. Her road to success was long – and unusual.

The law graduate didn’t put on boxing gloves for the first time until she was 28 – and she prefers not to take them off at all. Although a boxing career in Switzerland does not pay off financially, Gabi Balboa puts everything into the sport. The highlight of her career last year was her first European Championship fight.
