The calm after the storm reigns for the Joggeli. There is no one to be seen on the platform behind the Muttenzerbocht. Nothing reminds us that violent riots broke out here a week ago. Three security guards were taken to hospital with serious injuries, a new dimension of violence.
That’s how the ultras of FC Basel see it too. In a statement, the Muttenzer curve writes on behalf of the various fan groups: “After the cup semi-final against YB, we have massively exceeded our own limits. The level of violence shocks even us.” Respect for the life or humanity of the other is lost.
The hardcore fans are publicly showing remorse! What could that mean for the future? Blick answers the most important questions.
No. Because there will always be idiots – in the football stadium or outside it – who can’t control themselves, let themselves be provoked, lose their nerve, hit it. Frustrated people who need an outlet. And for the protection of the masses, they believe they can do anything.
A lot of. Because the vast majority of ultras are clearly fed up with a few black sheep. For the match against YB, the Muttenzer curve presents a fantastic choreography, masterfully orchestrated. In retrospect, however, all of Switzerland only talks about the chaotic. This cannot be in the interest of those who have spent countless hours on a choreo.
Yes. Dialogue and self-regulation are the keywords of the Muttenzer Curve: the black sheep must be banned and stopped. The fans write that they are “shocked” by the riots. However, self-regulation has essentially proven its worth in the past. In addition, they want to “actively counter the enemy image of the security forces that has grown over time”. This requires everyone involved and that is why the curve invites you to enter into a dialogue before the game against YB next Sunday. Ironically enough, on the spot where the massive riots broke out last Tuesday: on the platform behind the Muttenzerbocht.
Yes. “Even though we condemn collective punishment in itself and therefore also in this case, we will not avoid them on Sunday, but will come together for a mutual exchange,” the MK writes. The FCB itself had ensured that the bend was closed shortly after the riots. A measure that apparently made an impression.
On inquiry from Blick, the club says that the “self-critical statement of the Muttenzer curve” is very welcome. “The FCB sees it as an important basis for further dialogue.” And the ultras? They wish everyone injured a speedy recovery and apologize to the entire FCB family. “For our failure.”
The question is: Do the fans now follow their words with actions? Or will there be another riot in a few weeks or months?
