Nsame breaks all modern YB records

Watching the list of goalscorers is great. In the lead: Jean-Pierre Nsame (29) with 15 goals ahead of Cedric Itten (26) with 14 goals. Both play at YB. But they rarely play together. Means: One often looks.

For example, Nsame was “only” 17 times in the starting eleven in 26 games. 8 times he came as a prankster. With Itten, the numbers are almost the same, except he missed twice due to a red card suspension, so he played 25 games.

This part-time worker status has not stopped Nsame from overtaking Guillaume Hoarau (39) as the leading goalscorer of the modern era with a 2-0 win against GC. Both are now on 94 goals. As the best shooter of all competitions, Nsame had already replaced his compatriot, who earned his charity on “his” island of La Réunion, with the opening goal in Geneva when the score was 2-1 on 1 April. Nsame now has 120. Hoarau has 118.

But: the two Frenchmen can’t even begin to match the old champions from the YB heyday in the 1950s: Legend (bomb) geni Meier scored a whopping 313 goals in all competitions. Ernst Wechselberger 151. Meier scored 248 times in the championship, Wechselberger 113.

Back to the present. Wicky is full of praise for his protege. “He is a ‘killer in the box’, as they say in football parlance. I can’t believe how strong he is in the box. What he has achieved here in recent years is very special.”

And so Nsame is now on course to make the hat-trick for top scorer (after 2020/21 and 2019/20). The names that have made it three times are big: Seydou Doumbia, Christian Gimenez, Peter Risi, Fritz Künzli, Rolf Blättler, Jacky Fatton, Seppe Hügi and Alessandro Frigerio. Doumbia took a title with Basel. Geni Meier only made it once. So here too Nsame would set a new YB record.
