Jeremy Seewer’s MXGP victory dream ends in the mud at Frauenfeld

Five-time Vice World Champion Jeremy Seewer (28) is the great hope of Swiss motocross fans in Frauenfeld, where the premier class MXGP enters a World Championship race for the first time since 2018.

But just a few seconds after the start of the first run, the 12,000 spectators groaned – the Zurich man suddenly found himself in the mud. Opponent Calvin Vlaanderen touched him when he jumped into the air, Seewer fell through no fault of his own.

Brute: Since the entire field is directly behind him, several drivers touch and run him over. Seewer’s dream of a home win ends in the mud early on. Although he finishes both runs, it is only enough for GP place 11. Particularly bitter: his teammate Maxime Renaud (Fri, 22) wins the GP of all people.

Seewer arrives at the paddock but retires to his motor home. Father René Seewer stands by his Yamaha racing team’s tent and says: “Lots of hustle and bustle here!”

Seewer brings his bike back to the team tent. He keeps his helmet on, speeds to the washing area on an electric scooter and sprays his boots clean. He then hastily signs an autograph for a fan.

Seewer is in his retreat, well hidden in the sugar factory grounds. His own mobile home and that of his parents Anita and René are opposite each other.

Seewer asks Blick, “How much time do I have left?” He is suddenly in a hurry, has to go to a performance for the fans for a sponsor.

Lunch in the camper. A colleague cooked: sweet potato sticks with chicken.

It’s serious: 1st run of the MXGP class. His way to the starting area takes Seewer and all the other pilots through a residential area and the fans who are also on their way to the track.

Seewer enters the concentration phase. He closes his eyes and drives the route again in his mind.

The start. Seconds later, Seewer was lying in the mud through no fault of his own, after South African Calvin Vlaanderen had shot him in the air. “Obviously it was his fault. He then apologized,” Seewer says later. “I have a few scratches.”

The Bülacher falls again with its damaged engine. He only finishes in 20th place and says: “A lot of other drivers would have given up in the pits.”

Seewer is being treated by a physiotherapist. “Such a fall is a shock to the body. I’m all tense in the neck »he explains. “A normal person should take a three week break, but an hour later I have to race again. Thats crazy.”

Busy at Yamaha. Seewer mechanics are still repairing the engine. When he shows up for the second run and time is of the essence, the vice world champion has yet to help himself.

Start of the 2nd run. Seewer chases the top 4 but remains fifth. “After the fall I was a few percent short, my energy reserves were gone,” says Seewer.

His mechanic reverses the race engine. Seewer enters the paddock on a small motorcycle, with the daughter of colleagues on the back. His conclusion: «A very frustrating home doctor. It was just crazy today. But the next race is next week.”
