Captain Lia Wälti (29) surprisingly left the national camp on Thursday after the 0-0 draw against China. The Arsenal player gives the reason on Instagram the next day. “For personal reasons, the past few weeks and months have been difficult and mentally and psychologically draining,” writes Wälti. For this reason, she asked her club and national team for a break. “I’m treating myself to a break to focus on my wellbeing and hopefully I’ll come back refreshed and with recharged batteries,” continued Wälti.

National coach Inka Grings (44), who has refrained from nominating a player, spoke publicly for the first time on Monday about the departure of her midfield star. Wälti’s departure will not affect the World Cup in the summer, says Grings: “Lia remains our captain and one of the most important players.” She has spoken to Wälti beforehand and understands her desire for a break. “It’s important for them to relax for a few days, catch their breath and maybe see their family. I look forward to seeing Lia again next time we move in.”

Piusel: “We hope that Lia comes back stronger”

The teammates also took the captain’s departure sportingly. Seraina Piubel: “Lia explained her motives to us. We stand behind her and hope she comes back stronger.”

And what does that mean for Tuesday’s test against the fast Icelanders? Defense chief Viola Calligaris: “If Lia is missing, it’s different. She runs our game. But it’s also an opportunity for other players to slip into this role.” Grings reveals that Piubel will take over Wälti’s role in defensive midfield. For Poubel it doesn’t matter where she plays. She says, “I’m happy when I play.”
