Lent also keeps Super League clubs busy

Typical image in the Premier League: short break to break the fast.

It is customary in the Premier League: during the fasting month of Ramadan, which lasts until April 20, the referees must make it clear before an evening game whether one of the players is fasting. If this is the case, the referee should order a suitable break in play so that the fast can be broken.

Seven players are fasting at FC Lugano

Nothing is known about a similar initiative in Switzerland. Especially since no club has yet contacted the league and made a corresponding claim. For example, in the Lugano squad, seven players are fasting. Not drinking is a special challenge, Lugano’s coach Mattia Croci-Torti also knows that. “They are checked every day by our nutritionists,” he explains.

One of them is midfielder Ousmane Doumbia. “It is not easy as a top athlete, especially in the first weeks of Ramadan. But now it has become a habit. I know from previous years how to deal with it,” emphasizes the former FCZ player.

Fasting players are also an issue at FC Basel. Heiko Vogel tried to talk to them in the run-up to Ramadan. “I’m interested in my players’ backgrounds,” he explains. It is special what the professionals do in this day and age. “Not eating is one thing. I find forgoing liquid much more blatant, especially at high temperatures.”

Frick: “Those who convince, are positioned”

Fasting currently has several influences on training design, Vogel explains. “Kasim Adams has no limitations, he can do anything. At the moment, Jean-Kevin Augustin and Kaly Sène are skipping a few laps after practice.”

Like Vogel, Luzern coach Mario Frick also tried to talk to his players before Islamic Lent. “Also to assure them of our support or to discuss processes on the day of the game.” However, fasting does not affect the workout setup and setup. “Whoever convinces in training will also be placed by me,” says the Liechtensteiner.
