Defending champion Belinda Bencic loses the last rematch against Ons Jabeur 6: 7 (6: 8), 4: 6 at the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.
Bencic got off to an excellent start just 45 minutes after her victory over top seed Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals, but was unable to maintain her high level. At the end of the first set, a provisional decision is made, which after real ups and downs and has been playing for more than an hour, goes to the Tunisian.
Bencic leads 5:4 on the green clay court. If the Swiss can open the set, she concedes the break shortly after a good point from Jabeur. In the tiebreak, the Tunisian finally secured the first set.
As a result, the weather is getting better, but not Bencic’s game. Jabeur quickly pulls away to 4:1. The 26-year-old from eastern Switzerland holds back, but can only make up for one of the two breaks. After 2:01, Jabeur uses her second match point for revenge.
Despite the defeat in the final, Bencic looks back with satisfaction on another good week on the southeast coast of the US. In the semifinal, which was postponed to Sunday in the second-set tiebreak, she showed a mental masterpiece, winning five of the remaining six points in less than four minutes in the drizzle to win 7-5, 7-6 against the number 3 in the world.
Bencic finds the short detention in the interview on site “strange”. She will get over the fact that it is not enough for the ninth title in the 18th WTA final. After several weak tournaments, she finds her way back to success in one of her favorite tournaments – without coach Dimitri Tursunov, whom she said goodbye to last week after only five months and a good start.
