FCZ boss Canepa attacks Servette president Fischer

The 1:1 in the Letzigrund between Zurich and Basel is a rather slow affair. FCZ president Ancillo Canepa, on the other hand, is really offensive. The club boss targets Servette in the foreword to the match program. And Canepa refers to an interview by Servette boss Didier Fischer.

Canepa writes: “A few days ago, in a Blick interview, the president of Servette complained bitterly and probably in a tearful voice: the FCZ women only became Swiss champions last season thanks to their victory in the playoff final.”

What greatly disturbs Canepa about Fischer’s statement? That the Geneva representative was pro playoffs on the men’s Super League playoff issue.

“It is interesting in this context that he spoke out as a staunch supporter of the introduction of the play-offs. He and his club also passionately fought against FCZ’s request to abolish the play-offs,” Canepa writes.

He continues that clubs’ views on such issues should be separated from their own results. “The perspective can change depending on the wind direction. If you suffer from it yourself, those criteria apparently no longer apply.”

But Canepa misjudges one thing: Fischer is still up for the playoffs. It would have been enough to read the passage more carefully, which upset the resident of Zurich. When asked if Servette’s successes made him proud, Fischer said, “Yes. Besides that, our women’s football team SFCCF is in first place just like last year. So I hope it doesn’t lose the title like last season when a single playoff game decided against the best in the league.”

The crucial passage is “a single playoff game”. You should know: the quarter-finals and semi-finals were played in home and away games. The final, however, in one game. Fischer makes it clear: “That’s the only thing that bothers me. We’re still pro playoffs overall. But we’re up against a one-game final.”

With Canepa leading the way, the planned introduction of men’s league play-offs was scrapped in November, with the Scottish mode being used in the reinforced Super League from next season.

In the Women’s Super League, on the other hand, the first title was awarded in a playoff final last May (Zurich beat regular season winners Servette in a penalty shoot-out); the women’s format will be used as a test for five years.
