St. Louis City SC is the surprise team in Major League Soccer (MLS) and leads the ranking in the Western Conference. The newcomers from the state of Missouri are off to a dream start in their first season. Swiss goalkeeper Roman Bürki played a major role in the immediate success.
The former international leads his team onto the field as captain. For St. Louis sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel, there is no better goalkeeper in the American top flight. “What I think of him is very simple: he is by far the best goalkeeper in the league and an absolute leader who likes to take young players by the hand. That is incredibly important,” the German praised his goalkeeper at “Sport1”.
Bürki moved from Borussia Dortmund to the US in the summer of 2022, seven months before the start of the season. “He needed a different environment and also wanted something completely new,” explains Pfannenstiel. “Roman is very interested in American sports culture. So it was a perfect match. It suited Roman from day one. He feels good here.”
The accumulated experience of the 32-year-old goalkeeper from the Bundesliga is worth gold for Pfannenstiel. “The years at BVB have made him great. For me he is technically and tactically excellent. He is a keeper who plays along and is very strong with his foot. Roman is an aggressive goalkeeper who is a key figure for us because of his quality.”
The next game for St. Louis is on Sunday evening (4:30 Swiss time). It will be a first top fight for Roman Bürki’s still young team, as they are guests in Seattle. It is the clash between leaders and runners-up in the Western Conference. (mab)
