‘We have to stay sharp’

The players of EHC Biel can put aside their hockey sticks at Easter, devote themselves to the egg hunt and watch from the comfort of their armchair on Saturday evening whether Servette deploys his first match puck in the other semi-finals and follows them to the final. A nine-day break in the middle of the playoffs before it kicks off next Friday – that’s a lot. There is a risk of losing power.

But nobody can complain about the team of the hour after the 4:0 gala in the semifinal series against the ZSC Lions. One sees rather the advantages of the Seeländer. “If I can choose between rhythm and a break, I always take the break,” says sports director Martin Steinegger (51). But he also knows: “It will be a challenge for the coaches to find the right balance between recovery and high training intensity. The most important thing is that the guys stay sharp.”

Advantages against Zug

Striker Etienne Froidevaux (34) is not worried about that: “We can handle it, we are all professionals.” He is happy with the break: “Even though it was only four games, it was a tough series against the ZSC Lions. A few days of rest and taking care of the Bobos will certainly do us good.”

And who would the Seelanders prefer to have as an opponent? Napkins or train? “I can’t say that, they are both two strong teams – also with different qualities,” emphasizes Steinegger. However, he would be happy “if they played as long as possible”. Which makes it clear that he is keeping his fingers crossed for EVZ for the time being.

Based on the season record so far, the (still) champion would also be the better opponent: Biel scored nine points out of twelve against Zug, against Servette only four out of eight. And against Zug, Biel would have home advantage, but not against Servette. Steinegger: “Without home rights it would be a bit more difficult, but we also won twice away in the quarterfinals against Bern and in the semifinals against ZSC.”
