Erni Maissen played 426 matches for FCB. And scored 142 goals.

Erni Maissen (65) is usually in the Joggeli for his FC Basel matches – but the old FCB professional watched the cup semi-final against YB for once at home in front of the TV. “Luckily I wasn’t there,” says Maissen. Three seriously injured security guards end up in hospital. The Joggeli shame dominates the headlines.

Maissen, who scored 142 goals for FCB in 426 games, was still stunned two days later: “Those who were attacked are not trained martial artists, they are people like you and me. They are massively outnumbered and suddenly have to fight for their lives. fear because they are attacked by the mob.”

In the past, in the 1970s and 1980s, there were also hooligans, says Maissen. But that is not comparable. “The inhibition threshold is now much lower than it used to be. In the protection of the mob, almost anything is allowed, you are masked, the possible consequences don’t seem to matter.”

Maissen is against collective punishment

Maissen still thinks it’s wrong that FCB will now, as a result, close the Muttenzer curve in the next game against YB: “What’s the point? Closing the curve once? First you punish the 90 percent of the fans who behave properly, and the others will be there next time.” He was fundamentally against collective punishment.

It was also bitter that before the match against YB, the Muttenzer curve orchestrated fantastic choreography, invested countless hours and showed passion. In the end, however, only the excesses of violence are discussed. ‘That’s the bad thing. A few destroy everything that was built before. » Maybe that’s why the curve should self-regulate, exclude and punish the black sheep.

Maissen, who won two championships with FCB, does not believe that anything will fundamentally change. ‘It is always the same. If there are riots, it is said that something must be done about it. And two or three weeks later everything is back to normal. »
