Mbabu’s season turns into a nightmare

Pure disappointment for Kevin Mbabu (r.).

Kevin Mbabu (27) could have escaped to the cabin and drowned his sorrows in the shower. But the defender joined his teammates in thanking the Servette fans. This shortly after extending his nightmare season with his missed penalty and allowing Lugano to progress to the cup final.

“Like the whole team, I went to Kevin to show him our support, but it’s hard to find the right words,” said Steve Rouiller minutes after the acrimonious departure. “We can’t be mad at him, we can’t be mad at someone who takes responsibility.” Mbabu, the fourth Servette shooter, was the only player not to score.

Before his missed shot, Mbabu had activated the attack with a great pass to Stevanovic that led to Geneva’s 1-0 lead.

Smart move by Croci-Torti

An attacking contribution that wasn’t enough to hide the fullback’s trials in the two goals conceded. He was flagged for offside and was dribbled out by Ignacio Aliseda.

“Mbabu is an exceptional player,” said Lugano coach Mattia Croci-Torti. “Seeing how good his form was against YB, I decided to give Aliseda a rest. I knew he could be the man of the game in the cup, that he could use the spaces that Mbabu left behind.”

Not summoned by Yakin

Mbabu returned to his training club on loan two months ago. To “gain new strength”, to “find your level again” and to forget about the failed transfer to Fulham. There it was hardly used. One of the reasons why national coach Murat Yakin did not take him to the World Cup

Last month there was a first damper. Against Lucerne, Mbabu caused a penalty and saw the red card. In the stadium then? Murat Jakin. Mbabu’s name was also missing from the selection for the start of the European Championship qualifiers.

“Kevin can take us to Europe”

“When Kevin returned, he wanted to bring the Geneva fans and us to Bern,” said his teammate Steve Rouiller. “After the game he will not be good. We must support him and carry on. There are two important matches coming up. The first is Saturday’s derby against Sion.”

The championship is also the lifeline that Alain Geiger identified. Servette’s coach refused to point the finger at Mbabu. “Kevin still has ten games in the Super League to bring his qualities further. With his energy and his penetrating power, he will help us in our stride and can lead us to Europe.”
