The jubilation in Swiss football was great on Tuesday: the European championship for women will take place in this country in 2025. Games are played in Basel, St. Gallen, Zurich, Sion, Geneva, Lucerne, Thun and Bern. However, the last two locations still need to take special precautions.
UEFA stipulates that finals must be played on natural grass. As you know, there is artificial grass in the Stockhorn Arena in Thun and in Wankdorf in Bern. “The necessary change to natural grass at the Wankdorf stadium can only be made if a full-fledged alternative solution for training operations can be found in the vicinity of the stadium,” emphasizes the Super League leader.
At the time of the European Championship, the first team must be able to “prepare for possible European competitions and the championship”. Together with the city of Bern, we are therefore already working on a replacement solution. Since YB owns the stadium, the city is challenged.
The designated Swiss champion “is very happy with the prize for the European Women’s Championship and the organization of competitions in Bern”.
