And groundhog day: not a day goes by without a new rumor about the next heavyweight mega fight. Always in the picture: Tyson Fury (34).
Nor can it be ignored. “You coward of 90 kilos”, the Brit recently muttered on Instagram in the direction of Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (36). “You were never man enough to get into the ring with the gypsy king. Just run away!”
But even if Fury, fighting name “Gypsy King”, undefeated in 34 professional fights (24 knockouts, 1 draw), loudly bullies in the direction of his rival – in the end it was he who made the fight burst. In the surprisingly public negotiations, it turned out that Usyk was negotiating up to 30 percent of the fight exchange to somehow make the fight happen.
Fury would have received 70 percent of the proceeds. In the end, it should have been a rematch clause that made the fight fail. Only: Usyk did not insist either, his manager Alex Krassyuk explained.
That means: Fury kept asking for more and more until the deal broke. Because he doesn’t want to? Because he overestimates himself? Because he’s greedy? Unclear. It is also rumored that he has not really trained at a competitive level in recent weeks. Even mindgame friend Fury is crazy enough to go into battle with top technician Usyk unprepared.
The crazy thing: it would have been a historic fight, for the first time since 2000 there would have been a unification duel in the heavyweight division. At that point, Lennox Lewis became the undisputed all-important world champion. Now Fury or Usyk could carry the four relevant world association titles (WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF) and crown the single heavyweight king.
For now, nothing will come of it. “Fury wanted a 70:30 deal and didn’t think Usyk would accept,” ex-pro Paulie Malignaggi, who now works as a TV pundit, interprets the signals.
A well-known one is Anthony Joshua (33). The disappointed former world champion should have fought Fury in the winter. There was no duel there either. He says, “Look what’s going on with Usyk. It’s crazy.” He doesn’t make such negotiations public. “So it’s good that people can see what Fury’s opponents have to go through to fight.”
Meanwhile, the boxing world is wondering: Is Fury too crazy for a big fight? Usyk now has to defend his WBA title against Briton Daniel Dubois (25). And Fury is looking for an opponent again. Fury promoter Arum: “Tyson may want to fight Joshua.” After all, he knows about Fury negotiations.
