Mikaela Shiffrin looks back on an emotional winter.

Mikaela Shiffrin (28) has been catapulted into new spheres. Now the American ski highflyer gives a behind-the-scenes look in her YouTube documentary ‘Moving Right Along’.

At the end of January she won the first of two slaloms in Špindlerův Mlýn (Tsch). One victory was missing from Ingemar Stenmark’s record, everyone expected it the next day.

Shiffrin already felt in the morning that nothing would come of it. “86 seems a little too good to be true today.” In the end, she was just six-hundredths short of finishing second. And yet she had reason to be happy. “Something happened that no one was talking about,” she says. She won the slalom shot early on.

“The Biggest Goal For Me”

At the beginning of March she achieved her fifth overall victory in the World Cup in Kvitfjell (No). She almost couldn’t start. “I woke up feeling like the whole world revolved around me,” says Shiffrin. The reason: positional vertigo, caused by loose deposits in the semicircular canals of the inner ear. She could only participate thanks to exercises with the physiotherapist.

“The fifth overall World Cup win was the biggest goal for me,” says Shiffrin. Of course that had to be celebrated – including a dance performance.

“A Special Place for Me”

A week later she celebrated her biggest milestone in Are (Sd). “It’s a special place for me, I’ve experienced everything there,” she says. First World Cup win, first injury, three World Cup medals – that’s what connects you to this place. The pressure to break Stenmark’s record there was enormous. “I was expected to break the record this weekend. Anything else would have been a disappointment.”

Shiffin resisted the pressure. “I can’t remember the moment I crossed the finish line with the green light,” she says of her victories. “But everything else during the day, that’s what memories are made of.” Seeing teammates and family cheering gives her a tangible feeling. That’s another reason why she was so happy that her brother Tyson had secretly come to be there.

Detour to the sun

And how did Shiffrin reward herself for the exhausting season? She enjoyed the Mexican sun for a few days. “It was a damn great way to relax,” she wrote on Instagram.

However, the detour to the warmth did not last long. Because her hometown also wanted to celebrate Shiffrin. She was received in Vail on Sunday. And the greatest of all time received a fitting gift: a goat. Because GOAT as the English abbreviation for the greatest of all time means geiss. (bir)
