“My body can no longer stand in my way”

Focus on health: Leandro Riedi wants the injury breaks to finally end.

Three Challenger finals in two months – plus some exclamation points on the ATP tour. Leandro Riedi (21) Performance curve actually points steeply upwards. But currently? Is there a full stop? A stress fracture in his right foot forces the Zurich resident to take a break.

Having already reported problems in Indian Wells after surviving qualifying, things went no further. He had to pass for Miami, and an MRI examination proved to be the right decision: “If I had continued to play, I would have taken a big risk for the rest of the season.”

Now the reality is: home rehab instead of the ATP 1000 tournament in Florida. Riedi is ambivalent. On the one hand, there was the strong phase from November to spring with the tournament victories in Andria and Helsinki, which gave us courage for the next steps in our career. On the other hand, he is repeatedly slowed down by injuries. In January a ligament tore in my left ankle, now it is a stress fracture in my right foot. “That’s the only thing that’s really difficult at the moment,” says the right-hander from Bassersdorf. He emphasizes: “I have to give myself time now. My body can no longer stand in my way.”

“I’m Ready To Give Up Things”

Due to the now scheduled one-week break, the current number 155 in the world is no longer eligible for the main draw of the French Open. Before that, he would have had to fight his way into the top 100 in mid-April.

He wants to use the tip to spin as many wheels as possible. To avoid injury, he changes his stress management and cuts soda out of his life, for example, “I’m willing to give things up if it helps me.”

He describes the cancellation in Miami as a “slap in the face” that shook him up. The changes should help as soon as possible. However, he did not write off Paris and the premiere of the Grand Slam main draw. He wants to be fit again by the time of qualifying and be able to continue his good run.
