Strong start from Mauro Schmid in the 62nd Tour of the Basque Country: the 23-year-old from Zurich missed the stage victory on the 165 kilometers from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Labastida by just a few centimetres.
In the sprint, Schmid only has to give way to the Briton Ethan Hayter. The Quick-Step rider already proved his good form when he triumphed in the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.
The first, only slightly hilly stage of the Tour of the Basque Country is characterized by a leading group that is overtaken at 30 kilometers from the finish. In the sprint, Hayter benefits from the good preparatory work of his Ineos teammates.
The second stage takes the riders on Tuesday over 194 kilometers from Viana to Leitza. The Tour of the Basque Country ends on Saturday. (SDA)
