Nantes coach Antoine Kombouare (59) will remove regular player Jaouen Hadjam (20) from the selection for the home game against Stade Reims (0-3) this weekend. The reason: The football professional follows his faith and does not want to break his fast during the month of Ramadan (March 22 to April 20).
During Ramadan, Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. Hadjam is one of six Nantes professionals who are fasting. However, he is the only one who also observes Ramadan on match days.
“During the week fasting players don’t have to worry. But you shouldn’t fast on the day of the game,’ says the coach about his decision, which has drawn him a lot of criticism. Kombouare explains: “You have to be ready on race day. And in the group everyone should be treated equally, which would not be the case this way.” The player has not yet commented on the incident.
