Debut victory for Bezzecchi in MotoGP

The young Moto GP season has a new leader in the championship. Marco Bezzecchi takes the lead in the World Cup standings thanks to his first victory in the premier class.

Marco Bezzecchi has triumphed three times each in the two lower classes, and now the 24-year-old from Rimini is making his 22nd start in MotoGP, his first success in the top class. The driver from the junior team of retired superstar Valentino Rossi rushes forward from second on the grid and does not give up his position anymore. Bezzecchi becomes the first Ducati rider to win in Argentina and the first to come out of Rossi’s VR46 academy in MotoGP.

Frenchman Johann Zarco and poleman Alex Marquez of Spain complete the Ducati podium, more than four seconds behind. The Italian engine builders from Bologna confirm in the second race of the season that they are the benchmark of everything this year.

World champion Francesco Bagnaia, also a Ducati, and Saturday’s sprint winner Brad Binder (KTM) experience a black Sunday in the north of Argentina. Bagnaia, who won the opener in Portugal a week ago, falls in the rain, as does Binder, who both miss World Cup points. Now Marco Bezzecchi travels to Texas for the third stop in two weeks as the leader with a nine-point lead over Bagnaia. (SDA/dti)
