That’s how the shoot with Federer and Noah really was

Leading roles in the new Swiss tourist film: Roger Federer and Trevor Noah (right) on shooting day in January.

Getting on the wrong train at Zurich main station and then traveling without a ticket to the Bernese Oberland: in the new commercial for Switzerland Tourism, the protagonists tennis maestro Roger Federer (41) and South African star comedian Trevor Noah (39) make another wrong.

The shooting day with the two superstars in January is anything but a breakdown show. As a partner at advertising agency Wirz, Livio Dainese was responsible for the project. He tells Blick how things went behind the scenes.

Filming was done from 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM. But airs and graces? Doesn’t exist with Federer and Noah. “It’s impressive how Roger and Trevor get through such a long day in such a professional manner,” says Dainese. “After ten hours the crew is more or less in a knot, but you can’t tell anything about those two. They had a denser schedule than we did, because they recorded interviews and had photo shoots in between.”

Hollywood director is very, very precise

Working in front of the movie camera, Federer and Noah would have had to show each shot countless times. The reason: director Tom Hooper, Oscar winner 2011 with the comic “The King’s Speech”, also applied his Hollywood perfectionism in Switzerland. Dainese: «Tom was merciless, I’ve never experienced that in this form. He replayed the scenes until he was really happy with every little detail.”

However, it was often Federer and Noah themselves who stopped recording. “Roger often hid it with laughter when he got confused or when Trevor threw in something funny that wasn’t in the script. Typical comedian!”

There was hardly time for small talk on the day of the recordings. Things were different the night before when the crew and stars met for dinner. “I was able to talk to Roger about other things. He told me that he had tried padel (mixed form of tennis and squash, editor’s note) for the first time,” Dainese reveals.

The morning in Zurich in the middle of ongoing HB operations was also special. Dainese: «In any other country shooting in public would hardly be possible. But Roger was only asked for autographs a few times, he complied with the requests in a totally relaxed manner. »

The CEO of the responsible agency has already accompanied the Federer shoots with Robert De Niro (79) and Anne Hathaway (40) for the past two years. And this time too, while shooting with Noah, Dainese remarked, “It’s true that these greats consider it an honor to work with Roger.” And not the other way around.
