Alexander Nedbei (36) has been living in Switzerland for nine years. Born in Germany, he was offered a good job as a bodyguard and moved to Zurich. He later founded his own security company with 30 employees who took care of public order at the doors of several Zurich nightclubs. Nedbei himself was often in action and a familiar face in the scene.
The change in focus five years ago. From then on, Nedbei put everything on the boxing map. “I had to get up normally in the morning and go to bed normally at night. It wouldn’t have been possible otherwise,” says the boxer about his farewell to the nightlife. The start of his professional career came relatively late at the age of 30.
“A lot of people said to me, ‘Are you crazy? It’s way too late.’ But I didn’t listen to anyone and fought through it,” he says of the rocky start. And the bite is worth it: Nedbei starts at cruiserweight, currently has a record of 16 wins (12 after knockout) and only one defeat.
But the really big names were not among his opponents so far, Nedbei almost exclusively fought against German boxers with a negative record.
Now he faces the most important fight of his life so far: on Saturday in Montenegro he will meet Bosnian Sladan Janjanin (32, 35 wins, 14 defeats) and fight for the vacant WBC title for the best boxer from a total of ten Slavs. countries and the Balkan states. It is Nedbei’s first WBC fight.
According to his own statements, if Nedbei won the fight, he would be placed in the top 25 of the WBC. A difficult undertaking: the fight in Montenegro will be a test of endurance for Nedbei. “My goal is to knock out my opponent,” he says belligerently.
But there is much more at stake than the world rankings, as the fight is a springboard for Nedbei to make real money from the sport.
The German currently works as a personal coach for fitness and boxing. At this time, just before a battle, his daily life is very tiring. “It’s hard. I usually have two workouts a day and I have to train my clients too.”
That should change now: a win on Saturday comes with bonuses and fights with the boxing elite. “Then it gets interesting,” says Nedbei himself, who wants to compete at the highest level until he is at least 40.
So now the next chapter in the success story of the former bouncer, who dreams of becoming a boxing elite, has to be written in Montenegro.
