Swedish cross-country skiers are under threat on the net

Maja Dahlqvist wins the sprint shot in cross-country skiing.

The season ended in disappointment for Swiss cross-country skier Nadine Fähndrich (27). A nasty “Sweden package” saw Fähndrich give up the ball to Swede Maja Dahlqvist (28) in the sprint standings. Bitter.

Unsportsmanlike or smart – that is the question the cross-country world is asking after the campaign in Lahti, Finland. But what the team now has to listen to on the Internet, no one would want – not even Fähndrich: Dahlqvist and her colleague Moa Ilar (25) fell victim to hostilities after the season finale. From insults to threats, everything is covered.

Will the police intervene now?

Swedish national coach Anders Byström (45) strongly condemns the online attacks in “Aftonbladet”: “It is really sad and worrying that something like this is happening.” As a participant in the sports world, you are used to negative comments, “but this time we feel that it has gone particularly far.”

The Swedish Federation would now sit down and see what can be done to protect and support the athletes. “We take it very seriously.” They even consider calling the police. “It’s something we’re going to discuss and look at as we should, as an association or as individuals.”

Negative voices meet the athletes

Given the circumstances, the two cross-country skiers are doing well, Byström explains. But they would still hit the negative voices: “Of course it costs them energy. But they’re probably good at blocking things like that and not reading everything. But when such comments appear, it always comes out, of course.”

The action already had sporting consequences in the race: Ilar was subsequently disqualified for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Dahlqvist got away with it. And ended the season as the winner of the discipline classification. (tired)
