Will ZSC coach Crawford’s nerves hold up?

On February 15, 2023, ZSC coach Crawford insulted referee Mikko Kaukokari in the 2-3 draw against Biel.

Against Biel, an ugly face often appears on the opponent’s side. This applies not only to outgoing SCB striker Chris DiDomenico, but also to Marc Crawford. The ZSC coach only panicked on the bench in Switzerland twice. Twice against Biel. Chance?

That was the case a month and a half ago when the 62-year-old completely lost control en route to the 2-3 home defeat against the Seeländer. His anger was directed at Finnish referee Mikko Kaukokari, who refused to check the time on the game clock. In a choleric fit, he called the referee “son of a bitch” (in German: Schwlutscher) in unacceptable slang, among other things.

Crawford’s homophobic choice of words called Denis Vaucher onto the scene. The league director filed a lawsuit against the ZSC coach, who was subsequently suspended for one match and fined CHF 3,260.

Crawford’s first outburst had been ineffectual. And maybe he calculated it to distract from a bankruptcy against Biel. The Lions went down 5-0 in the first game of the quarter-finals of the 2015 play-offs at the Hallenstadion when the mandatory skirmishes broke out in the final phase. Heated words between the Bieler Bank and Swedish ZSC defender Henrik Tallinder, who tackled Ahren Spylo. Crawford climbs up the Plexiglas wall and shouts to Biel coach Kevin Schläpfer, “Hey Hollywood! Look at me! Shut up! Let the players play! Look at you, Hollywood!” He tries to mock the Basel bidder’s head of hair with a gesture.

Schläpfer found Tallinder’s provocations “a bit embarrassing” and criticized: “Zürich should have stepped on the accelerator and scored goals for the fans. I was a bit disappointed that they tried to do things like that.”

“Like the New York Rangers Met Huttwil”

Perhaps it is this attitude of the Bielers that drives the opponents crazy. That the Seelanders at least subliminally convey the image of angels meeting devils. That a club with sublime, noble values, where players can be people, meet someone who wants to solve everything with money. In a double interview with Lions counterpart Sven Leuenberger in the “NZZ” ahead of the semi-final series starting Thursday at the sold-out Tissot Arena, sporting director Martin Steinegger, the second qualifier’s sporting director, taunts: “Zurich is much higher favourite. It’s a kind of like the New York Rangers meeting Huttwil.”

Will Bieler Retrigger Crawford and the Lions? The 1996 Stanley Cup winner (with Colorado) and 2014 Swiss champion (with the Lions) knows he can’t afford much more. He apologized for his verbal blunder to Kaukokari. “I know it was wrong. I made a big mistake. I was socially irresponsible,” he told Blick.

pk In 2015, Crawford defeated Schläpfer & Co. in the series 4:3 and after the last siren, there were reconciliation scenes between the coaches, who have since met several times and can now laugh at the “Hollywood” scene.
