Dortmund is in first place, one point ahead of Bayern. And all of football Germany is looking forward to Saturday’s game in Munich. With Gregor Kobel (25), the Swiss goalkeeper of Dortmund has to report fit again after muscle problems. And at the same time, BVB is doing everything it can to keep the national keeper longer.
Blick learned: Dortmund wants to extend the contract with Kobel, which runs until 2026, prematurely. It’s a contract for a year or two. That this BVB would cost dear is already clear as Kobel is one of the most sought after goalkeepers on the market.
Manchester United and Chelsea have expressed specific interest, Blick reported on March 1. At Bayern he is provisionally exchanged after Manuel Neuer (contract until 2024), which does not surprise expert Lothar Matthäus: “He is playing an excellent season. I definitely see him as a good candidate for Bayern when Manuel Neuer retires, he is almost ten years younger than Neuer and Sommer. I can imagine him in Bayern’s goal in the future.” And now there are rumors in England that Tottenham Hotspur are thinking of him because of the successor to world champion goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
If the financially strong English are involved, that changes the starting position. Then it is realistic that Dortmund suddenly collects 40 to 50 million euros.
Dortmund knows this – and now wants to keep Kobel, who was number 1 in the goalkeeper rankings by the trade magazine “kicker”, for a longer period of time. A costly affair after the keeper’s performance explosion.
So far, Kobel, who came from Stuttgart in 2021, earned about four million euros a year. To sign a new contract, it should be 12 to 13 million. Kobel would thus grow into the top earners at BVB. It is the amount that Marco Reus or Niklas Süle would earn.
In comparison: Yann Sommer (34) receives about eight million euros from Bayern with a much lower market value due to age. Munich paid nine million euros to Gladbach.
When Dortmund sports director Sebastian Kehl was asked on “Bild-TV” whether Gregor Kobel would play at Bayern for the next two years, he replied: “In the next two years? nonsense! Definitely! Because Gregor still has a contract until 2026.”
Maybe even longer if Dortmund really opens its wallet.
