Shortly before the start of the second half of the season, Yann Sommer (34) made the switch from Gladbach to Bayern. Nati’s goalkeeper has arrived in Munich and is facing the hottest phase of the season.
In the Bundesliga the top match is against Dortmund, in the cup they will meet Freiburg and in the Champions League there is a huge duel in the quarter finals against Manchester City.
Sommer tells Germany’s “Bild” that winning the premier class is “his big goal” this season. “The motivation of this team is incredible,” he says enthusiastically about his teammates.
The injured Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (37) is also a major subject in the interview. “We see each other almost every day. Our exchange is very positive,” says the Swiss about the relationship between himself and his future competitor.
But what will it look like in the summer when Neuer returns? He is not thinking about that yet, says goalkeeper Sommer. “Right now I’m focusing on this season. We’ll see what happens in the summer!”
The German newspaper calls the contract period until 2025 in Sommer’s working document “a statement”. However, a shorter contract period was never an option for the keeper himself. “Only signing until summer was never an option for me,” he clarifies.
The Swiss calls the upcoming top match against Borussia Dortmund a “statement game” in which it “is going to get hot”. He is looking forward to the duel with his compatriot Gregor Kobel (25): “It’s great that there are two Swiss keepers in goal in such a top match.”
According to Sommer, the two get along well, Kobel has made a nice development. But next Saturday all niceties are forgotten and Sommer wants to take the first step towards the big goal of the season with his Bavarians. (byl)
