Last week, the international ice hockey federation IIHF announced that Russian and Belarusian teams will remain banned from all events until at least 2024.
Former Russian hockey player Igor Larionov (62) has now commented on the extended suspension and demands a response from the Russian Federation.
“We have to make sure we are respected. And today the IIHF turned its back on us,” Larionov told Russian website allhockey.ru.
Therefore, he proposes that the Russian federation leave the IIHF. His justification: “Why do we need the IIHF? Virtually all national players play in the NHL, we could do business directly with the NHL.”
Background: For example, Russia could field a squad of NHL players at the World Cup of Hockey, a national team tournament organized by the NHL and the NHLPA (players’ organization).
Igor Larionov played in the NHL for 14 years and won three championships in the best hockey league in the world. He has since been inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. From 1992 to 1993 he also played for HC Lugano in Switzerland due to a salary dispute. In 2006 he ended his active career.
He is currently the coach of Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Russian Hockey League KHL. (byl)
