Reusser declares double misfortune in wheel triumph

She was on her way to her biggest victory in a one-day race when the accident happened. Marlen Reusser (31) drives straight on 5 kilometers from the finish – she should have turned right. “I think I was not so focused anymore. However, the curve was also very poorly represented. In the end it is not tragic at all and actually quite funny.”

In fact, Reusser’s lead yesterday is so big that the small detour doesn’t matter. She solo wins the classic Gent-Wevelgem after 167 kilometers in the cold and rain with a lead of 2:42 minutes. “On the home stretch, I was at the end of my strength, just frozen. Still, I knew I was going to achieve something very big. I will never forget this day and I am really proud of myself.”

Computer went on strike – luckily

The resident of Bern can be too. With her victory in Belgium, Reusser proves that she is no longer just world class in time trial, but a full-fledged driver. Her speed increase on the Kemmelberg at 40 kilometers from the finish is so great that no one can follow her. “I really only wanted to reduce the leading group,” says Reusser.

Suddenly traveling alone, she has a few thoughts – especially since she assumes there are still 50 kilometers to go to the finish. “I had a defect before and had to change the wheel. The bike computer didn’t turn on until 10 kilometers later. When I noticed the mistake, I got extra motivation.”

One night after her triumph, Reusser is still overjoyed. “And I thawed again,” she says with a smile. Next Sunday, the next cycling classic will follow with the Tour of Flanders. By then everyone will know: Reusser should be on the bill.
