For Lucerne captain Jashari, this is “not a downgrade”

Last year, Ardon Jashari went from strength to strength. “I’ve been through a lot,” he says. In January 2022 he was in the starting eleven in the Super League at FC Luzern for the first time. A few months later he was named captain. And finally, in November, he was part of Murat Yakin’s national squad for the World Cup. “It was a dream come true,” emphasizes the 20-year-old from Baar.

Now Jashari has to settle for the U21 national team on his way up. “This is not a downgrade,” he clarifies. He made this decision in consultation with Yakin. “As for the European Championships in the summer, he told me it would be good if I went to the U21 and got to know the staff and the players better.”

“I want to move forward”

Jashari actually only knows Patrick Frame’s team to a limited extent. He has only been called up to the U21 squad once – in March a year ago. And he never qualified for the lower Nati selections. Still, he has a clear vision of how he wants to help the team. “I want to continue and take responsibility, as I do in Lucerne.”

On Tuesday, the U21 national team will face Israel in Basel. After the narrow defeat against Spain (2:3), a victory is now needed. “When we act as a team, we don’t have to hide from anyone,” says Jashari. With this attitude you want to survive the summer in the hammer group with Italy, France and Norway. That’s how Coach Frame sees it. “We have to be incredibly strong as a team.”

Jashari’s Lucerne teammate Pascal Loretz is also part of the current U21 national team. Last month, the Krienser perfectly replaced the injured FCL regular goalkeeper Marius Müller. There is a good chance that he will make his debut. “He certainly has good playing opportunities,” the frame confirms.
