Have fun making a video for a Nintendo commercial: Switzerland’s Carole Howald, Ami Korey Dropkin, and Japan’s Chinami Yoshida (from right).

The message in this short commercial from cult game maker Nintendo is simple. The story goes like this: the ice cream man in a curling hall is tired of his job, he leaves the hall in frustration – and immediately finds the pleasure of curling in the bar next door, having discovered it as a video game on Nintendo Switch consoles .

Then curlers from the room join in and go wild as they discover their sport in the virtual fun version. The name of the game? Just as easy: “Let’s Play Curling!” (English: «Let’s play curling!»).

Right in the middle of this funny and over-the-top video game commercial that will be playing up and down all screens during the big Grand Slam tournaments in Canada this winter: Swiss curler Carole Howald (30 years old on Wednesday) of Skip Silvana’s successful World Cup team Tirinzoni.

“It was a very relaxed evening”

How did the top curler from Langenthal BE end up in Nintendo advertising as an amateur actress? “We were playing the Grand Slam in Northbay, Canada, when Korey asked me if I wanted to be there,” says Howald. Korey Dropkin (27) is one of the best curlers from the US, is in contact with two Canadian film producers and asks around during the Grand Slam tournament who can be excited about a fun performance for a video game.

Howald agrees in case she finds a time slot between games. One night it turns out. “We then drove to the small hall of the Northbay Curling Club and shot on the ice and in the club restaurant. The atmosphere was totally relaxed, it was a very relaxed evening,” de Berner describes.

One of the two film producers is pretty much the video guru of Canadian curling. And because the video game is supported by the Canadian federation, he’s also making this commercial.

Video shoot with Japanese arch-rival

He got a diverse group in front of the cameras. Robbie Doherty, a Canadian entertainer with a past in curling, plays the kurligen Eismeister.

In addition to the American curlers Dropkin and Howald from the Swiss world champion team, there is also Chinami Yoshida (31). The Japanese is a sports heroine in her homeland. As part of Japan’s world-class team, she won Olympic bronze in 2018 and Olympic silver in 2022 after the semi-final coup over Switzerland.

In sports, Howald and Yoshida are arch rivals. Now they suddenly appear side by side in a commercial. But the Swiss says: “The curling scene is very clear. On the ice you are opponents. But otherwise it’s very informal, you know each other well.”

And so, two of the best curlers in the world have a lot of fun together when, for once, instead of swinging the broom on the ice, they swing the Nintendo controller wildly to play the virtual brick.
