“His girlfriend was a problem for the Bayern hut”

The training hammer from Munich occupies the football world. Julian Nagelsmann (35) has to go to Bayern Munich and will be replaced by Thomas Tuchel (49). Blick expert Markus Babbel, European champion in 1996 with Germany and longtime Bayern defender, analyzes the situation.

Blick: How about the carriage hammer?
Marcus Babylon: What a blast, I’m as surprised as anyone. Nevertheless: I had been afraid for a long time that it was brewing internally. It was also about the way you play football, where everything was from great like against Paris SG to zero performances like in Leverkusen. The Bayern bosses saw their goals in jeopardy – and if you are no longer convinced by the coach, then you have to break up. As painful as it is, both personally and financially.

Bayern once brought Nagelsmann over from RB Leipzig for an amount of 25 million euros, he has a contract until 2026. That will be expensive.
Absolute. But at the time, it was hoped to shape an era with him. Being successful with him for a very, very long time. But there were rumors that he was no longer 100 percent coming through the dressing room.

What are you up to?
It’s about two things. On the one hand because of his style, to be honest I didn’t understand that he didn’t really learn anything in those two years. He has often put himself at the forefront, but at Bayern you have to know: the team is the star, not the coach. The team is so extraordinarily well-stocked that you always have to maintain authority, but also step back and let the team do its job. In interviews, Nagelsmann provided a target for criticism. Because he said something about everything and you felt like he always has to amen.

And the second point?
I know his relationship with the Bild reporter is a huge topic in the locker room. It didn’t go well at all that he was with her. So his girlfriend was a big problem for Bayern. There was a breach of trust as some players just couldn’t communicate what they were thinking anymore. Because they were afraid that everything would be in the newspaper.

Well, you can’t control where love falls.
Yes, but if you fail to show consistent success, things will get tough. And you weren’t consistently good. That the bosses are now responding to this is very consistent. You can’t just keep going and hoping it gets better. Of course I feel sorry for Julian because I am convinced that he is an excellent coach. But maybe the station just came too early. He may also have underestimated what it means to be a Bayern coach, where the demands are high. It’s not like Hoffenheim or Leipzig, where it’s not that dramatic when you lose. At Bayern you have to win every Bundesliga game and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

His successor will be Thomas Tuchel. A good choice?
An exceptionally good coach, comparable to Julian, both at the highest level. The advantage is that Thomas has already proven that he can handle big clubs. At Paris SG he controlled the star ensemble and made it to the final against Bayern. For me it’s about what the players say about the coach after a time together, and they’ve always praised him. You can now see what is happening in Paris – no one has controlled the store like he has. With Chelsea he made the big hit with the Champions League victory.

But he is also considered difficult to get along with.
It’s a man who knows exactly what he wants. If you don’t go, you’re in big trouble. He makes no compromises. Of course, it’s not that simple inside. He has his clear demands, which he also insists on internally. Big discussions can ensue, as was the case recently with Chelsea. But now you can see that things are not going smoothly. You could have done better with Thomas.
