It was Thomas Frischknecht (53) who warned on Wednesday: “That is far from being decided.” What the Swiss mountain bike legend meant: the seemingly comfortable overall lead in the infamous Cape Epic team stage race by Swiss duo Nino Schurter (36) and Andri Frischknecht (28).
Frischknecht Senior, the team boss of Schurter and his son in the World Cup with Scott, was right. The lead in South Africa melted away by 2 minutes in the time trial on Thursday. And is completely gone on Friday on the fifth stage. Schurter/Frischknecht lose 2:40.7 minutes at the finish to the German duo Georg Egger/Lukas Baum after 102 km and 2450 vertical meters.
The German duo snatched the leader’s yellow jerseys from the Swiss, who had worn Schurter/Frischknecht since Tuesday. The Olympic champion and the son of the cycling legend will start this Saturday with 1:29.2 minutes behind the penultimate stage.
Schurter can therefore continue to dream of his third overall victory in the most prestigious cycling stage race after 2017 and 2019.
By the way: Frischknecht Senior is not only there as an observer at Cape Epic. The 1996 Olympic silver medalist competes himself – teaming with Urs Gerig (58), takes a remarkable third place overall in the “Grand Masters” Over-50 class.
