Are the Lakers missing playoff DNA?

Playing better than your opponent is not enough in the playoffs. The best example of this is the Lakers. In three of the four quarter-final matches against EVZ, they played strong and convincing, exposed the champion’s problem areas in defense, scored beautiful goals – and are still 1:3 in the series with their backs to the wall. Why?

“That may sound difficult now,” says Dominic Lammer, the SCRJ player with the most playoff experience, “but no matter how well you play, only the result counts.”

Lammer has 78 National League playoff games. But EVZ has almost three times the playoff experience of the Lakers. Only goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni has 175 playoff games to his name.

“A lot goes on in the head in the playoffs,” said Lammer, “we learned that last season.” At that point, the SCRJ was ahead of the HCD 3-0 – losing the quarterfinal series. “How you learn to deal with different playoff situations as a player is a process,” says Lammer. “It’s not like in qualifying.”

Piston in the slot better than the Lakers

Playoff means ice hockey in fifth gear: the duels cost more energy, nothing is given to the opponent. “You have to go where it hurts,” emphasizes Lammer, “the games are decided in the slot. The people of Zug behave better than us there.”

Deviant goals, converted rebounds, traffic for the keeper. According to the 30-year-old, the Lakers still have potential in these disciplines. It is made too easy for Zug’s champion goalkeeper Genoni – who has not lost a playoff series in five years. He reads the Lakers’ game and sees their shots all too well.

The result: The Lakers have scored one goal in 14 power plays to date, while the EVZ have scored four goals in nine outnumbered situations. Still, Lammer reiterates, “We shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand right now, we should get closer together.” Your advantage: “We have nothing to lose.”
