Stricker fights his way to victory at the start in Biel

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

Dominic Stricker struggles to advance a round.

Dominic Stricker (20) is at least a small step closer to the goal of celebrating the premiere in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at the French Open. The world number 118 defeated the Kazakh Beibit Zhukayev (22/ATP 343) 7: 6, 7: 6 in the opening match in Biel.

To realize Paris’s main field dream, the Bernese must break into the top 100 on April 17. In this way, he can avoid a similar scenario as at the Australian Open when he had to qualify – and failed there in round three.

Stricker now urgently needs points for the big jump in the tennis world rankings. He is the tournament favorite in Biel. Next week he plans to compete in Lille, where there is also a Challenger competition.

The Romanian Marius Copil (32/ATP 422), the Basel finalist from 2018, who lost to Roger Federer in two sets at the time, is now waiting in round two from Biel. The former world number 56 has only played at the Challenger level for several years. (mpe)
