Playoff Wild West – and nobody does anything

Stick hit to unprotected head: EVZ defender Nico Gross was hit by Rappi’s Michal Jordan.

When borders are explored, attacks are the logical consequence. Then the rule keepers on the ice and at the counters are in demand. However, the control bodies have failed lately.

One of many examples: On Sunday at Swiss Life Arena, HCD defender Aaron Irving checks vigorously ZSC striker Jerome Bachofner and from a short distance from behind in the rink, Bachofner’s head bangs against the edge of the rink.

Against Irving, there is neither a remaining disqualification nor an investigation against him. Why? For a lighter version of this fact (there was less speed in the game), Biel’s Mike Künzle was logically taken off the ice the day before and suspended for two games. Where is the common thread?

However, this is just an example. At the same time in Rapperswil: The robust EVZ mercenary Justin Abdelkader (36) falls very theatrically twice after very light contacts, but the referee steps in on the rip-off of the NHL veteran and imposes penalties.

However, Sandro Zangger’s high stick to the head in the same match is practically unpunished – with two minutes Abdelkader comes out of the affair far too easily for a health-threatening action.

However, the climate between the Lakers and Meister Zug has been poisoned since the first game. The reason: a blow from Rappi defender Michal Jordan to the unprotected head of Zug defender Nico Gross is dismissed as a coincidence. From the referees, from the officials for player safety (!) and from the single judges. Incomprehensible.

Lakers sports director Janick Steinmann: “There is a lack of respect for the health of the opponents in certain scenes. Hardness doesn’t mean getting hurt. We sports strategists have a lot of work ahead of us, in the summer we will have to ask ourselves whether the rulebook is being interpreted correctly in Switzerland.”

However, countermeasures are already required, not just as immediate measures on the ice. And: fines for swallowing and trading must be issued within a reasonable period of time (i.e. the day after), not just ten days after the event. Those who do not take action against actions in the Wild West suddenly find themselves in a bush league.
