Tennis legend Navratilova emotional about double cancer shock

Martina Navratilova looks back on tough weeks.

At the beginning of this year, Martina Navratilova (66) made her shock diagnosis public. The former number 1 in the tennis world fell ill again with cancer at the end of 2022. 13 years after she was first diagnosed with breast cancer, the disease is back. And affected not only the chest but also the larynx. “This double bad luck is serious, but still curable,” she said in a statement. “I will fight with everything I have.”

The 18-time Grand Slam winner fought, now she talks about this difficult time for the first time on the British talk show ‘Piers Morgan uncensored’. And can announce good news: “As far as you know, I am cancer-free,” reveals the American born in Czechoslovakia at the time.

Although she continues to receive radiation for the next two weeks, “I should be fit again by then”.

Ring the bell for redemption

The road to it has been a tough one. No wonder Navratilova looks back on it emotionally. “I was in total panic for three days because I thought I might not see next Christmas.” She is already thinking about what else she wants to experience in recent months. “This may sound superficial now, but I thought to myself, ‘What great car do I really want to drive if I live another year?'”

Then there is the first redemptive message: the doctors tell Navratilova that her cancer is curable. When her therapy is over, she can ring the bell at the clinic. The video of this moment plays during the interview. “I’m already crying when I look at it again, because you just can’t wait to ring the bell,” tears welled up in the tennis legend’s eyes.

“Don’t Think It Will Come To That”

The diagnosis also messed up private plans. She and her wife Julia Lemigowa (50) wanted to increase the family and make their daughters Victoria (21) and Emma (17) big sisters. “We’ve been thinking about adoption, but it’s definitely been postponed and I don’t think it will happen,” Navratilova reveals. The focus is on the fight against cancer. The treatment was “definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done”.

Now she is optimistic about the future. She is getting better every day and the sense of taste damaged by chemotherapy and radiation is slowly returning. “I don’t want to waste my energy on things that make no sense and don’t make a difference not only to me but also to the people around me,” says Navratilova.
