Rafael Nadal is no longer in the top 10 in the world.

One of the most impressive record streaks in tennis has been broken: Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal (36) has fallen out of the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in nearly 18 years. The Grand Slam record champion, who is currently injured, is 13th in the rankings published on Monday. Before that, he was among the top ten players in the world for no less than 912 weeks in a row.

On April 25, 2005, the then 18-year-old Nadal reached the top 10 for the first time. Jimmy Connors (USA) had 789 weeks in a row between 1973 and 1988, the Swiss superstar Roger Federer between 2002 and 2016 734 weeks in a row. For women, American icon Martina Navratilova even holds the record of 1,000 weeks in the top 10.

Nadal suffered a hip flexor injury during his second-round exit at the Australian Open, when the 22-time major winner will return to the tour is still open. In his absence, his 19-year-old compatriot Carlos Alcaraz won the Masters tournament in Indian Wells and again replaced record Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic (Serbia) at the top of the world rankings. Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev lost one place and is in 15th place. (AFP/sme)
